At Galway Chapter No 5408, on Thursday 23rd March 2017, it was our great pleasure to not only have a candidate for the evening but also to mark a great epoch in the Chapter’s history, as we celebrated Excellent Companion Peter Christian’s landmark service of fifty years to the Order.
Peter Henry Christian was born in 1930 and celebrated his 86th birthday in November 2016. Peter was initiated into the Daybrook Lodge on the 5th March 1963 and was exalted into the Galway Chapter on Thursday 23rd March 1967 - exactly 50 years ago to the day of our meeting held in March 2017.
In 1967 there were 56 members of the Chapter and Peter was exalted by the Most Excellent, Excellent Companion Henry Thomas Christian, his father. Twelve years later, in 1979, Peter was installed as the Most Excellent Zerubbabel by our recently departed John Shearman. The Chapter was now 58 members strong. Peter was appointed Assistant Scribe Ezra in 1982, a post he held for 11 years, before being promoted to Scribe Ezra in 1993, a post he held for four years. It is interesting to note that in 1993 the MEZ was Excellent Companion Mick Joynes, the Scribe Nehemiah was Excellent Companion David Ross and the Principal Sojourner was Excellent Companion Robert Grummitt, all of who are still strong supporters and members of Galway Chapter.
Peter received his first appointment to Provincial rank in 1984 when he was appointed Past Provincial Assistant Grand Sojourner. He received a promotion in 1990 to Past Provincial Grand Registrar and again in 1995 to Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah.
The Deputy Grand Superintendent, Excellent Companion Mark Foster Holliday (who is also a member of Galway Chapter) was pleased not only to present Peter with his certificate but had the following words of congratulations, with which the whole Chapter concurred: “Peter, you have now completed fifty years of Royal Arch masonry with great distinction, a wonderful achievement and one of which you should feel rightly proud. On behalf of the Province, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent and the Companions present this evening, I congratulate you and thank you for your contribution. I have much pleasure in presenting you with this fifty years’ certificate with my very best wishes.” The whole Chapter agreed that not only was this a landmark achievement, but an honour to which both Peter and Galway Chapter could be extremely proud.
